What is an RF front end ?

RF front end

1) RF front-end is the core component of the communication system

The radio frequency front end has the function of receiving and transmitting radio frequency signals. Its performance and quality are the key factors that determine the signal power, network connection speed, signal bandwidth, communication quality, and other communication indicators.

Generally, all components located between the antenna and the RF transceiver are collectively referred to as the RF front-end. The RF front-end modules represented by Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, cellular, NFC, GPS, etc. can realize the networking, file transfer, communication, card-swiping, positioning, and other functions.

2) Classification and functional division of RF front-end

There are various types of RF front-ends. According to the form, they can be divided into discrete devices and RF modules. Then, the discrete devices can be divided into different functional components according to their functions, and the RF modules can be divided into low, medium, and high integration modes according to the degree of integration. group. In addition, according to the signal transmission path, the RF front-end can be divided into a transmitting path and a receiving path.

From the functional division of discrete devices, it is mainly divided into power amplifier (PA), duplexer (Duplexer and Diplexer), radio frequency switch (Switch), filter (Filter) and low noise amplifier (LNA), etc., plus baseband chip form a complete radio frequency system.

The power amplifier (PA) can amplify the radio frequency signal of the transmitting channel, and the duplexer (Duplexer and Diplexer) can isolate the transmitting and receiving signals so that the equipment sharing the same antenna can work normally; the radio frequency switch (Switch) can realize the radio frequency signal reception and Transmitting switching, switching between different frequency bands; Filters can retain signals in specific frequency bands and filter out signals outside specific frequency bands; Low noise amplifiers (LNA) can amplify small signals in the receiving path.

Divide low, medium, and high integration modules according to the integration level of radio frequency modules. Among them, modules with low integration include ASM, FEM, etc., and modules with medium integration include Div FEM, FEMID, PAiD, SMMB PA, MMMB PA, RX Module, and TX Module, etc., modules with a high degree of integration include PAMiD and LNA Div FEM.

The signal transmission path can be divided into a transmitting path and a receiving path. The transmitting path mainly includes power amplifiers and filters, and the receiving path mainly includes radio frequency switches, low noise amplifiers, and filters.
